The elite members of Farron's Undead Legion, bound together by their shared wolf's blood. At some point in the past, they linked the fire as one. It may be that they are a group of individuals, or a consciousness linked across several bodies by the wolf's blood.

The "head" Abyss Watcher the player fights is known as the wolf blood master.1

General Information

This is the first Lord of Cinder the player will encounter. They block the path to Aldrich, Devourer of Gods and Yhorm the Giant.

This fight is mandatory.

Found near to the Farron Keep Perimeter bonfire in Farron Keep. To reach them, you need to unlock the stone gate that is controlled by the three Farron Keep Flames in the swamp.

Note that since the area is guarded by the Watchdogs of Farron, you will only be able to summon one friendly phantom unless you use the Dried Finger.

  • Sirris of the Sunless Realms, on the left side of the entrance. You must have talked to her in Firelink Shrine - during this conversation she will offer her cooperation. Let the area reload so that she disappears from Firelink Shrine. After that, her sign will be available for the Abyss Watchers fight. She will show up in Firelink Shrine once you have opened the stone gate.
  • Black Hand Gotthard, on the spot where the Darkwraiths and the Ghrus fight.
  • Londor Pale Shade, by the Farron Keep Perimeter bonfire, only available as long as you have the Dark Sigil in your inventory.

Phase 1

Stab-The Boss lunges at the player with his sword. Range varies depending on distance away from the boss.

Dash Slash-The Boss dashes forward a great distance and does an almost 360 degree slash.

Uppercut-The Boss swings his sword upwarda followed by a large dust cloud. Can knock the player down.

Jump slam-The Boss jumps towards the player and slams his sword into the ground upon landing.

Phase 2

Dash Burn-A Wild Flaming Dash Slash at the player where the boss swings his sword, except now a fire trail soon follows the boss's path and burns everything in the way, slight delay for the trail to start. Woe to any who stick to his back too long once the trail of flame starts to move. The boss may combo these, and alert rolls and moving around is recommended.

Fire Sword-The Boss attempts to hit the player with his flaming sword using various swings. This includes a gap closer where a delayed blaze of fire burns you if you dodge roll into the space behind the enemy. This delayed fire effect is similar to the explosive laser beam attack used by lesser amygdala in Bloodborne, with the exception that only the explosion, and not the laser itself, did damage.

Each Abyss Watcher can be staggered fairly easily, so attacking multiple times can be done safely occasionally.

Phase 1

During this phase there will be multiple Abyss Watchers attacking you, and occasionally each other. The original is the one that you need to kill to advance to phase 2 (You can tell because the original one doesn't die or have a smaller health bar like the others). The first Abyss Watcher that spawns will only attack you, but the second one will attack anything (and the others will attack it if you back off). Throughout the phase it alternates between enemy watchers and neutral watchers. You can tell the difference as neutral watchers have red glowing eyes. Let them do the fighting for you whenever possible. Neutral watchers have 400 HP on NG.

Phase 2

During this phase you will fight a single Abyss Watcher, who has been buffed with fire. Most of his attacks have multiple stages, so don't attack him too early. The easiest attack to punish is his Flaming Slide, where he will slide in a straight line. Dodge it and attack him immediately as he has no follow-up for this move.
Alternatively, wait for him to do the finisher where he performs a front flip and then smashes his sword into the ground. The explosion is small enough that you can roll forward into it for a dodge, then get in position for an easy backstab while he recovers. He often does this after the double twirling slashes (make sure you're out of range for those).

  • When you enter the boss room, you will likely see one Abyss Watcher fighting others. This is likely because the rest of the Abyss Watchers have gone hollow, or have been corrupted by the Abyss. This would explain why one is fighting the others, as their lives are dedicated to fighting the Abyss, and its abominations, even if that means killing each other.
