The red-hooded, wandering slave knight Gael sought the blood of the dark soul as pigment for the Painted World.

But Gael knew he was no Champion, that the dark soul would likely ruin him and that he had little hope of a safe return.

General Information

The final boss of the Dark Souls franchise, fought in a wasteland at the end of the world. For character information, go to Slave Knight Gael.

Location

The Ringed City

  • Appears down the hill past Filianore's Rest, by an area filled with thrones towards what appears to be structure seen at the start of The Ringed City and towards the Lothric ruins in the background.

Moveset

First Phase

  • First Combo: Gael will do a frontal slam, sometimes following it with a second one. Should this happen and the player is standing at close range, the boss will back away and do an uppercut-attack with his sword, rarely following it with a slash. After the second slam, if the player is at mid-range, Gael will follow up with a quick leap slam or a slow leap slam, and then sometimes with a back away uppercut or a quick plunge.
  • Second Combo: Swings his sword to his left. If the player is close, will sometimes swing back. Or if the player tries to get away, will perform a quick leap slam sometimes followed by a plunge.
  • First Side Attacks: Holds still, then slashes his sword on his right or left. Only happens if the player is standing by his side.
  • Second Side Attacks: Briefly takes some distance, then closes up with a swing. Only happens if the player is standing by his side.
  • Grab: Lunges a long distance while thrusting his sword, piercing the player and raising them up before slamming them down if it connects.
  • Plunging Attack: Gael will jump up in the air and attempt to slam you down where you stand with his sword while grabbing it with both hands.
  • Leaping Attack: Leaps into the air with a first slash, then slams his sword back to the ground.
  • Enraged Combo: Holds still and growls for a few seconds before performing a 3-slash combo, followed by a fourth slash and a quick plunge from the air if the player is close enough.
    • Begins doing this attack a third of the way through the first phase.
  • Upward Slash: Slashes his sword quickly upward while getting some distance from the player.
    • Begins doing this attack halfway through the first phase.

Phase Transition: At 65% HP, cutscene plays, and Gael begins to hollow and stand up. Now utilizes a Crossbow and the Way of White Corona. Every sword attack is now briefly followed by a cape hit, dealing Dark damage. Poise carries over.

Second Phase

  • Horizontal Attacks: Swings his sword to his left. If the player is close, swings to his right then sometimes follows up with a thrust-like attack, leaving his left side safe. If the player has reached mid-range right after the first slash, Gael will sometimes follow up by firing his Crossbow.
  • Vertical Attacks: Slams his sword to the ground. If the player is in front of him, will lift his sword in the air. Staying close and in front of him after this will result in a second slam follows up.
  • Close Crossbow: Gael will back away while attacking with his Crossbow. Only occurs at close to mid range.
  • Far Crossbow: Gael will walk forward, holding his firing Crossbow. Only occurs at long range.
  • Weapon Art: Holds a stance with a glowing red light, then performs a spin attack if the player is at close range, or a lunge forward if the player is at mid range.
  • Way of White Corona: Casts five Way of White Coronas which stand still for a few seconds, then come back to Gael. Gael can only cast this at mid or long range.
  • Right Side Attack: If the player is by his right side, Gael slashes in that direction, sometimes followed by a thrust-like attack.
  • Left Side Attack: If the player is by his left side, Gael slashes in that direction, sometimes followed by a slash to his right and maybe a thrust-like attack.
  • Thrust-like Attack: Gael will perform a thrust-like attack. This will only happen if the player is standing at mid-range.
  • Running Slam: Gael will run at the player and slam his sword to the ground. He then sometimes follows up with a spin attack if the player stands on his sides, or lift his sword in the air if the player stands close and before him.

Phase Transition: At 40% HP, Gael holds still and moans in pain, before exploding and summoning homing skulls that create dark spots on the ground, marking where lightning will later strike. He will now be followed by a donut-shaped area where lightning can spawn, meaning that being far from Gael can result in being hit by a randomly spawning lightning strike.

Third Phase

  • Horizontal Attacks: Swings his sword to his left. If the player is close, will swing to his right then sometimes follows up with a thrust-like attack, leaving his left side safe.
  • Vertical Attacks: Slams his sword to the ground. If the player is in front of him, will either perform a single leaping-slam, or perform a first leap firing his crossbow and slam his sword, followed by yet another leaping-slam. If the player is on his side, will sometimes do a spin attack that can be followed by a thrust-like attack.
  • Weapon Art: Holds a stance with a glowing red light, then performs a spin attack unleashing skull projectiles if the player is at close range, or a lunge forward unleashing skull projectiles if the player is at mid range. Either way, will finally follow by a lunge-slam. Every skull that hits the ground will leave a dark mark, where lighting will later strike.
  • Right Side Attack: If the player is by his right side, Gael slashes in that direction, sometimes followed by a thrust-like attack.
  • Left Side Attack: If the player is by his left side, Gael slashes in that direction, sometimes followed by a slash to his right and maybe a thrust-like attack.
  • Thrust-like Attack: Gael will perform a thrust-like attack. This only happen if the player is standing at mid-range.
  • Running Slam: Gael will run at the player and slam his sword to the ground. He then follows up with a spin attack and a thrust-like attack if the player stands on his sides, or lift his sword in the air if the player stands close and before him.
  • Long Leap: Leaps on his right, then closes up to the player with a slash to his left, followed by another one to his right and then sometimes by a thrust-like attack.
  • Skull Explosion: Holds still and moans for a few seconds, then unleashes skull projectiles and an AoE attack at very close range, followed by a long leap with no follow up. Skulls leave marks where lightning will later strike.

Trivia

  • Similar to Deacons of the Deep, the Phase 2/3 Gael is hidden out of bounds, and takes linked damage as the real source of the health bar. He is teleported in during the phase transition.
  • Gael is smaller during Phase 2/3.
  • Unused animations exist for Gael being parried, as well as unused attacks such as a jumping slam.
