General Information
When connected to other players online for Co-op or PvP, players who are guests in a host's world will appear as a phantom.
Phantoms are designated a recognizable color to establish their friendliness or hostility to a host.
Some of the eight colors are shared by the available multiplayer items, meaning the phantom's color alone does not distinguish the covenant they belong to in all cases. The Undead Match will select phantom colors based on covenant.
Effects of Phantoms
Phantoms prevent resting at bonfires or quitting the game while in a host's world and most have unembered HP by default. Additionally, all phantoms have halved Estus Flask and Ashen Estus Flask charges rounded down, with Siegbrau and Divine Blessing being unaffected. Phantoms may have icons by their name related to the Undead Match or downscaling.
Enemies are friendly to invaders; they can be walked through and cannot hurt the invader (with exceptions). Invaders are sent home if the host enters a boss fog gate. Phantoms can drop and trade items between players, but certain items and gear higher level than a player's matchmaking range cannot be traded. DLC items can be dropped to players without the DLC.
Note: Enemies that are naturally hostile or able to hurt other enemies will be able to damage invading phantoms.
White, Yellow, and Purple Summons in the world increase the strength of enemies/bosses, but can't fight/interact with NPCs. Allied players, including Covenant Phantoms, are incapable of hurting or parrying each other, and may heal or Buff each other.

NPC Phantoms
You may summon or be invaded by several NPC phantoms, and you don't need to be online for this to happen, although you still need to be embered. Additionally, NPCs are capable of summoning the player or in one case can be invaded by the player.
Note As of Patch 1.05.1, Regulation 1.09, NPC invaders (except for Mound-makers) will not invade if Steam is Offline.
